Grammar, Nation, and Morality in the Age of Enlightenment
By the eighteenth century, grammar had become more than a linguistic concern. It was a mirror of the nation’s order, a reflection of English identity itself. The early modern age had learned its grammar through Latin; now English sought to teach itself. The impulse was both patriotic and moral. To write and speak correctly was to belong — to display reason, virtue, and self-command.
Robert Lowth’s Short Introduction to English Grammar (1762) carried the moral authority of a sermon. Its “rules” — no double negatives, no prepositions at the end of a sentence — were less about logic than about social decorum. They taught that language, like manners, should be disciplined and exact. Joseph Priestley’s rival Rudiments of English Grammar (1765) offered a gentler vision: correctness should rest not on Latin analogy but on the living usage of educated speakers. Between them, the prescriptive and the descriptive traditions of English grammar were born.
By the close of the century, Lindley Murray’s English Grammar (1795) had turned these ideas into a national institution. His example sentences—“Virtue ennobles the mind,” “Industry and temperance are the guardians of health”—reveal how deeply grammar had become tied to morality. To learn grammar was to learn civility. The order of sentences mirrored the order of society.

Europe Opens Its Eyes
After the liberation of the Enlightenment, Europe opened its eyes to the world as it was, not as theology or tradition had decreed it to be. The old hierarchies of knowledge—church, monarchy, and classical authority—had lost their sacred aura. What replaced them was a faith in observation, measurement, and proof: the spirit that Auguste Comte would call positivism.
In language study as in physics, scholars began to believe that truth lay not in what ought to be, but in what could be seen and demonstrated. Words, like species, had histories; their forms evolved by laws that could be traced and described. The grammarian, once a moralist or a schoolmaster, became a kind of scientist—patient, empirical, and secular in outlook.
The Birth of Positivism
Auguste Comte was a seminal figure, writing at the beginning of the nineteenth century and deeply influenced by the political changes set in motion by America and France. The idea that society could be rebuilt on reason rather than revelation—that order might arise from knowledge instead of divine command—formed the heart of his philosophy.
Comte’s Cours de Philosophie Positive (1830–42) proposed that human thought evolves through three stages: the theological, the metaphysical, and the scientific or positive. In this final stage, truth is no longer deduced from dogma but derived from observation and verification. His vision mirrored the democratic experiments of his time: just as politics sought rational order without monarchy, so knowledge sought rational order without metaphysics.
Positivism thus became the philosophical climate in which modern linguistics could be born. The language scholar would no longer prescribe usage as a moralist but observe it as a naturalist, collecting evidence and tracing laws of change. The grammar of English, like the government of nations, was to be founded on facts.
The nineteenth century pivoted on this faith in human capability. It was the fulcrum on which scientific progress turned—a century of confidence, curiosity, and restless invention. The Enlightenment had freed thought from the chains of dogma; positivism now declared that reason itself could master the world. Man, newly conscious of his powers, became both the subject and the measure of all inquiry.
In this mood of intellectual exhilaration, Comte and Nietzsche stand as emblematic opposites yet kindred spirits. Comte embodied the disciplined, empirical body of the age—the conviction that knowledge could build a new moral order. Nietzsche embodied its liberated mind—the belief that, once unchained from God, Man could create his own values and meaning. Between them lay the vast spectrum of nineteenth-century thought: from the laboratory to the abyss, from order to freedom. Both sprang from the same awakening—the conviction that humanity, at last, could know itself.
The Rise of Comparative Philology: Language as a Science of Evolution
As positivism spread through nineteenth-century thought, its spirit of empirical inquiry transformed the study of language. Grammar was no longer a set of rules to be memorised but a living record of human history. Words, like species, revealed descent, mutation, and adaptation. What had once been the moral domain of the schoolmaster became the investigative field of the scientist.
The catalyst was Sir William Jones, a British judge and Oriental scholar who, in 1786, observed that Sanskrit bore a profound structural resemblance to Greek and Latin. From this observation grew the idea of a linguistic family tree: that the languages of Europe and India descended from a common ancestor later called Proto-Indo-European. It was a discovery as momentous for philology as Darwin’s was for biology.
During the early nineteenth century, scholars such as Franz Bopp, Rasmus Rask, and Jacob Grimm transformed this intuition into a science. Grimm’s Deutsche Grammatik (1819–1837) identified the systematic sound shifts—p → f, t → th, k → h—that came to be known as Grimm’s Law, proving that phonetic change followed regular and observable patterns. Language, once thought to decay from perfection, was now seen to evolve according to natural law.
By mid-century, comparative philology had become a grand intellectual enterprise. It sought to reconstruct the prehistory of humanity by tracing the migration of sounds, words, and ideas. August Schleicher even drew “family trees” of languages, depicting descent and divergence like species in an evolutionary chart. The analogy with biology was not accidental: both disciplines shared a conviction that nature and culture alike obeyed discoverable laws.
In England, this scientific outlook reached its finest expression in Henry Sweet, whose A New English Grammar (1891–98) applied historical and phonetic analysis to the structure of English itself. Sweet treated speech as data: the living evidence of how language changes in real time. His precision and empiricism anticipated the phonetic alphabet, the linguistic laboratory, and ultimately modern linguistics.
Thus by the close of the century, the study of language had completed its transformation. The prescriptive and moral traditions of the eighteenth century gave way to an empirical science of sound and structure. Philology became the archaeology of the human voice — uncovering in every syllable the slow, lawful evolution of thought and culture.
The Threshold of Linguistics
The introduction of the word linguistics marked a turning-point in the evolution of language study. It signalled the moment when grammar ceased to be a moral or comparative discipline and became a science in its own right. By the mid-twentieth century, the old philological search for origins had given way to a fascination with structure. “Structuralism” became the watchword of the 1960s: language was now to be understood not through its history or its social use, but through the internal rules that generated its sentences.
It was a logical development. Chomsky’s Syntactic Structures (1957) stood squarely on the foundations laid by Saussure and Bloomfield, transforming the comparative study of language into a formal system of rules and relations. The comparative philologists had looked outward, tracing relationships among tongues; the structuralists looked inward, uncovering the hidden architecture of syntax. What they gained in analytic power, they risked losing in breadth and human perspective. In making language a formal system, they risked forgetting that it was also a living medium of thought and meaning.
The study of text remained the discipline’s uneasy conscience. Was style to be explained by formal pattern or by meaning and intention? Text linguistics tried to devise generative rules for coherence and narrative, yet the living complexity of language continually eluded definition. It was only with the advent of the large-language models of the twenty-first century that the riddle was, in a sense, solved—though by machines rather than by theorists.
These models, trained on the total corpus of human text, reproduced the generative patterns of language without ever “understanding” them. Their success bewildered the very scientists who had made it possible. “A little knowledge,” as the proverb warns, “is a dangerous thing.” One is reminded of Oppenheimer at Alamogordo, watching the first atomic explosion and quoting the Bhagavad-Gita: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” In both cases, the insight that liberated humanity from ignorance also exposed it to consequences beyond comprehension. The science of language had at last created a machine that could speak—but not a mind that could mean.
The Limits of the Scientific Imagination
Every period in history has seen language differently. In the Renaissance it was viewed as part of a divine order. In the Enlightenment it became a moral discipline. The nineteenth century treated it as a science, and in the twentieth century, under Chomsky, it became a system of rules in the human mind. Each step brought new understanding, but each also left something behind — the sense of language as a living human activity that joins people together.
In the early decades of the twentieth century, many scholars believed the major questions about language had been answered. Historical and comparative linguistics seemed complete, and the structural methods developed by Saussure and Bloomfield gave the subject an appearance of scientific certainty. The field entered a quiet phase in which description replaced discovery.
That calm was broken by Noam Chomsky in the 1950s. His theory of generative grammar promised to explain how an unlimited number of sentences could be produced from a small set of rules in the human mind. It transformed linguistics, giving it a new sense of purpose and analytical precision. Yet the model never worked as completely as its elegance suggested. It described the skeleton of language, but not its living use. As Chomsky himself admitted, his approach continued “the rationalist conception of mind that can be traced back to Descartes and the Port-Royal grammarians,” and depended on “the judgments of native speakers — data of introspection that the linguist must account for.” (Aspects of the Theory of Syntax, 1965, pp. 19–25.) His theory was therefore philosophical rather than empirical: a modern Cartesianism built on intuition.
Over time, researchers began to move in other directions — into sociolinguistics, pragmatics, stylistics, and cognitive linguistics — areas that relied more on observation and interpretation than on formal proof. The foundations of phonology, syntax, and semantics remained, but the unity of the discipline was lost.
Half a century later, the large language models of artificial intelligence achieved in practice what the generative theorists could only imagine. By learning from immense collections of human text, these systems can now produce fluent, grammatical language on demand. They do what Chomsky’s model attempted to do: generate sentences. But they do so without awareness or intent. They reproduce the surface of language, not its depth. They show that the mechanical side of language can be mastered, yet they also reveal how far that is from understanding.
Large language models were developed in computer laboratories, not in linguistics departments. That fact is revealing. By the time computers became powerful enough to handle natural language, academic linguistics had turned away from data and experiment toward abstract theory. Chomsky’s influence was decisive here. His vision of language as an innate mental system made linguistics a branch of cognitive philosophy rather than an empirical science. While this gave the field intellectual stature, it also distanced it from the technological and statistical approaches that later proved so productive. In the end, it was computer scientists — not linguists — who built the first systems that could actually generate and process language at scale. Chomsky opened the conceptual door, but his own methods ensured that others would walk through it.
Among those who did was Geoffrey Hinton. Trained in psychology and computer science, not linguistics, Hinton recognised that learning depends on the gradual strengthening of connections — like the synapses of the brain. His development of neural networks and the principle of back-propagation in the 1980s made possible the deep-learning systems that underpin today’s artificial intelligence. The language models that astonish us now are the result of that insight. They arose not from the study of language itself, but from the study of how systems learn. Where linguists saw structure, Hinton saw adaptation; where Chomsky described rules, Hinton modelled growth. It took an entirely different kind of mind to make machines that could speak.
And yet, the irony is complete. The field that set out to explain how an infinite number of sentences can be produced from a finite set of rules has failed to solve its own question. Linguistics showed that the problem was real, but not how it worked. Its greatest theoretical ambition — to explain the creative power of language — was achieved, in the end, by machines built for an entirely different purpose.
